First-grader’s penmanship wins contest hands down

At Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Depew, his diligence is well-noted, according to teacher Debbie Szczepanski.

The first-grader “takes a lot of time when he does his work,” she said. “He’s one of the last ones to finish because he’s taking so much time.”

Voters approve school budgets

Depew Union Free School District residents gave their superintendent a vote of confidence on Tuesday.

By a vote of 629 to 267, residents approved Superintendent Jeffrey Rabey’s $37.4 million budget.

Voters in the Lancaster Central School District apparently like the direction in which the school community is going.

Residents who headed to the polls approved all four propositions on the ballot, including Superintendent Edward Myszka’s $91.5 million spending plan. That proposition passed 1,824 to 1,308.

Cause of sewer clog unknown

The Village of Lancaster is still waiting to learn who may be responsible for the April 23 backup of a sewer located under the east side of a bridge that carries Broadway over Cayuga Creek.

Crews worked overnight on that date to remove cooking grease that had clogged a pipe 25 feet below ground and threatened to cause a backup of the sewer system into village homes.
