Alleged mix of texting, DWI leads to accident

Wednesday, April 21
• Police responded to a hit-and-run accident at 4:05 a.m. on Bonita Drive and saw a vehicle with heavy front-end damage moving backwards on Martin Court. Upon talking to the driver, a Depew man, officers said they noticed an odor of alcohol and signs of intoxication. The man allegedly failed field sobriety tests and registered a 0.12 percent blood alcohol content on a breath test. He was released on his own recognizance.
• A Depew business owner reported at 8:35 a.m. that someone in Rio de Janeiro added VIP Celebrity Service to the owner’s phone bill, and the suspect was using the service while the owner was left to pay the bill. The victim traced the suspect through his Internet protocol address.
Friday, April 23
• Depew police and fire officials responded to a call about an ashtray fire at 10:20 a.m. in the D&L Plaza on Broadway. The fire was extinguished with 6 ounces of water.
• Depew police and fire officials responded to a call about smoke in a basement at 5 p.m. at a Broadway business. The tenants were evacuated, and it was determined that the cause was a belt in a washing machine.
Saturday, April 24
• A Depew woman reported at 10:05 a.m. that someone sprayed a white substance on her vehicle and placed expandable foam in the exhaust pipe.
• Depew police and fire officials responded to a call about a mulch fire at 10:45 a.m. on Fairview Drive. A cigarette butt was found to be the likely cause. Damage was listed at $25.
• Police stopped a vehicle for having tinted windows at 10:10 p.m. at Walden and Sheldon avenues. Upon talking to the driver, a Lakeview man, officers said they noticed an odor of marijuana. The man also allegedly admitted to having marijuana and a pipe in the vehicle. He was released on his own recognizance.
Lancaster
Tuesday, April 20
• A representative of a Central Avenue gas station reported at 1 p.m. that a driver accidentally left a hose in his vehicle and drove away, pulling the hose off the gas pump. The hose was tangled with another, causing the second one to be torn away as well. Damage was listed at $360.
Wednesday, April 21
• Officers saw a vehicle traveling 69 mph in a 40 mph zone and stopped the vehicle at 3:15 a.m. on Transit Road. Upon talking to the driver, a Cheektowaga man, officers said they noticed an odor of alcohol and signs of intoxication. The man allegedly failed field sobriety tests and registered a 0.16 percent blood alcohol content on a breath test. He was released on his own recognizance.
Thursday, April 22
• Officers responded to a disturbance at 9:20 p.m. on Maple Drive and saw a vehicle driving backward on the complainant’s lawn. Upon talking to the driver, a Buffalo woman, officers said they noticed an odor of alcohol and signs of intoxication. The woman allegedly failed field sobriety tests and registered a 0.13 percent blood alcohol content on a breath test. She was released on her own recognizance.
• Police responded to a two-vehicle accident at 2:25 a.m. on Central Avenue. One vehicle struck a fence and came to rest in the front lawn of a home. Upon talking to the driver, a Lancaster woman, officers said they noticed an odor of alcohol and signs of intoxication. The woman allegedly failed field sobriety tests and registered a 0.22 percent blood alcohol content on a breath test. She also allegedly admitted that she was texting when the accident occurred. She was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated, moving from a lane unsafely and using a cell phone while driving and released on her own recognizance.
Saturday, April 24
• Police saw a vehicle run a red light and stopped the vehicle at 2:25 a.m. at Bloomfield Avenue and Kokomo Street. Upon talking to the driver, a Depew woman, officers said they noticed signs of intoxication. The woman allegedly failed field sobriety tests and registered a 0.17 percent blood alcohol content on a breath test. She was released on her own recognizance.
• A Lancaster woman reported at 10:20 a.m. that a man took her dog for a walk at 7:30 a.m. and didn’t return and that she wanted to report the incident as a theft. The man finally returned with the dog and said that he was at a friend’s house. The woman told the man to leave and that he was no longer welcome in her home.
Sunday, April 25
• Police saw a vehicle stop in the middle of the road several times and stopped the vehicle at 12:55 a.m. on Broadway. Upon talking to the driver, a Cheektowaga man, officers said he admitted to having marijuana and a pipe in the vehicle. He was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and released on his own recognizance.
