COOL BUSINESS — George Besser installed an ice-making machine at his new refrigerator plant on Central Avenue.

LANDSCAPING — The appearance of West Main Street was greatly improved by the removal of a large maple tree in front of Mr. Balthasar’s place.

LAST WILL — An Alden man wrote his will in verse so the courts would not undertake to reverse it.

ALL TOGETHER — The Zurbrick families held a reunion at the Marquart farm.

NEW HOME — Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ziegler moved into their new house on School Street.

Aug. 29, 1935

PROMOTION — Acting Lancaster Postmaster Frank J. Ball received his appointment as postmaster.

IN PRACTICE — Dr. John L. Roberts, a June graduate cum laude from the University of Buffalo dental schools, opened his office at 63 E. Main St.

PARTY — Miss Ruth Smith of Maple Avenue entertained at a kitchen shower in honor of Miss Catherine White of East Main Street.

HONOR — Joseph Suttell of Clark Street was the only resident of Lancaster who displayed the flag at half-mast Aug. 23, the day of the funerals of Will Rogers and Wiley Post.

Aug. 30, 1945

OFF THE JOB — The workers of the Lancaster Malleable and Steel Co. were out on strike for the past 17 days.

NEW IN TOWN — Witkop and Holmes of Buffalo planned to open a store, having leased property of Frank Deja on Central Avenue.

LEADER — John Meiler was appointed district deputy great sachem of the Improved Order of Redmen.

Sept. 1, 1960

BACK TO SCHOOL — About 4,200 students were preparing for the new academic year in the Lancaster Central School District.

HEALTH CARE — The new, $3 million St. Joseph’s Intercommunity Hospital in Cheektowaga was set to open. The 100-bed facility was to be operated by the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph.

STATE LEVEL — The Central Garden Club of Lancaster had a noncompetitive exhibit at the New York State Fair in Syracuse.

BIG-TIME BAND — American Legion Junior State champs the Sherburne Central School Band performed at the Lancaster Central football stadium. Sherburne also was the Veteran’s Hospital championship for 1960.

BANK BOSS — James Strong of Depew was appointed manager of the Liberty National Bank Getzville Office, Amherst

IN OFFICE — Registered nurse Wendy Sue Colling of Lancaster was elected secretary of the Erie County Unit American Cancer Society.

Sept. 5, 1985

FOR THE KIDS — The Lancaster Town Board approved the allocation of $620,000 to benefit area youths by renewing the town’s applications with the New York State Division for Youth for programs in 1986. Funding would provide assistance to the Youth Bureau, recreation and other programs.

NEW BRIDGE — After nearly a year of construction, the Lake Avenue bridge in the Village of Lancaster was set to reopen. The state-funded project completely reconstructed the structure.

VEGGIE VANDAL — A Hess Place woman reported to police that someone tossed a cucumber through a window of her front door.
