Depew house fire causes $80,000 damage
A house fire Monday night in Depew caused $60,000 damage to the structure and $20,000 to its contents.
Fire and police personnel were alerted to the blaze around 10:20 p.m. at 63 Colony St., and the house had been evacuated by the time they arrived. A resident reported that he saw smoke behind a television and the room began to fill with smoke. He then opened the basement door and saw flames and more smoke and evacuated the home, according to a police report.
Fire Chief Gary Cummings said on Tuesday that the source of the fire is still under investigation. The Depew Police Department reported on Monday that a Cheektowaga fire investigator was called to assist Depew.
A firefighter also was taken by the Lancaster Volunteer Ambulance Corps to the Erie County Medical Center, Buffalo, after the fire was extinguished. Cummings said that during routine vital checks of the firefighters, the individual’s readings were abnormal, so he was taken to the hospital for observation and released.
