Federal fire grants available

The application window for grants provided through the Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Services program is now open, Rep. Brian Higgins, D-District 27, has announced.

SAFER grants are aimed at increasing the number of firefighters and enhancing a department’s ability to comply with federal standards that ensure that their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire related hazards. This year, Congress appropriated approximately $420 million for the SAFER program.

The applications and program guidance document for FY2010 SAFER grants is available on the Department of Homeland Security website for the Assistance to Firefighters program at www. firegrantsupport.com. The website also provides information on program priorities, frequently asked questions and an applicant tutorial. The application period will close Friday, Sept. 17.

Applicants with questions may contact the SAFER grant help desk from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday at 1-866-274-0960 or firegrants@ dhs. gov.
