OEM plans 9/11 memorial, open house Sept. 11
The Town of Lancaster Office of Emergency Management invites the public to a 9/11 remembrance and dedication of its new building from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at 321 Columbia Ave., Depew.
The event will include guest speakers, a christening of the former Depew Library building and refreshments.
The OEM has come a long way since it first originated with six members from the old “combined HazMat team” in 1994, with George MacPeek as the coordinator, according to volunteer Audrey Hydock. It originally was stationed in the former Lancaster ambulance building behind Lancaster Town Hall on Clark Street.
In 2000, under the direction of Robert J. MacPeek, George MacPeek’s brother, the OEM was moved to 525 Pavement Road. Relocation to the Depew site began in October.
“Team members have worked many, many hours, repairing, painting, cleaning and setting up equipment,” Hydock said. “Also, members have worked on the landscaping of the grounds. We are very proud of our new home and will show it off during the open house.”
The OEM now has 40 members. While the team originally had an old ambulance and a supply trailer, today its has several vehicles, including a mobile command center, mobile rehab vehicle, mobile communications center and a HazMat supply vehicle, among others. The vehicles will be on display during the open house. Computer and radio demonstrations also will be offered.
Also during the event, the OEM will accept donations for military personnel serving overseas.
