St. Mary’s honors students, announces play, review classes

Fontana Fontana Victoria Fontana, a senior at St. Mary’s High School in Lancaster, was recently notified that she has been named an Outstanding Participant in the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

Rebecca Kranz, principal of St. Mary’s High School, made the announcement during a recent school assembly.

Fontana is one of 3,100 students recognized nationwide for this honor. She scored in the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 African Americans who were considered for the award when they took the 2009 Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Test.

Fontana is the daughter of Frank Fontana, and they reside in Cheektowaga.

Also, senior Christina Loniewski has been named a Commended Student in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. Loniewski received a Letter of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, in recognition of her award.

Commended students placed in the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2011 competition by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

In other news at St. Mary’s, the Performing Arts Department will present “While the Lights Were Out” as this year’s fall play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, and Friday, Oct. 29, in the auditorium of the school, 142 Laverack Ave., Lancaster. Tickets cost $5 and are available at St. Mary’s or by calling 683-4824.

The school also will hold a series of review classes for students who will be taking the Catholic High School Admissions Exam in the fall. The classes will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Oct. 30 and Nov. 6 and 13, with a practice exam given on the last date. The cost of the classes is $60 and includes a review book. The classes will prepare students to take the Catholic High School Admissions Exam at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20. For more information or to register, call 683-4824, ext. 37.
