Lancaster’s Bauth wins Gold Medal at Youth Olympic Games
Lancaster resident Jordan Bauth won a Gold Medal in the Team Figure Skating Event at the first ever 2012 Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria this past weekend. Figure skater Jordan Bauth, 14, of Lancaster, won a Gold Medal this past weekend in the Team Figure Skating Event at the first ever 2012 Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria.
Following a random draw, eight teams were created mixing skaters from all represented countries. Bauth was teamed with Shoma Uno, the men’s figure skater from Japan, and the dance team of Eugenia Tkachenka and Yuri Gulitski from Belarus. Bauth skated a clean program and pulled her team into the gold-medal-winning spot.
In the highly competitive Short and Free Skating Programs, Bauth placed seventh with two clean programs in a field of the world’s best young figure skaters.
Bauth’s coach, Lenel van den Berg, accompanied her to Innsbruck and said, “The Opening Ceremonies were amazing and electric with the feeling of the regular Olympic Games. This has been the most incredible experience for Jordan and she has enjoyed and excelled in the spirit of the Youth Olympic Games.”
Bauth trains with world coaches van den Berg, Kirk Wyse and Suzanne Bauth and represents Amherst Skating Club. Bauth is a freshman at Lancaster High School and in addition to her skating, she enjoys being with her friends, listening to music and fashion design.
She is the daughter of Joe and Suzanne Bauth, who also traveled to Innsbruck to see the competition.
“How incredible was it that people from the U.S. Figure Skating Olympic Committee sat in a room discussing who should represent the U.S. and the person they came up with was our daughter,” Suzanne Bauth said. “Watching Jordan compete in front of that many people was nerve wracking. My heart raced and was beating out of my chest when she was on the ice and her name was announced as representing the USA. We could not have been more proud of her how she handled herself, she skated beautifully, but I was most proud of her poise and elegance she carried herself with throughout.”
The 2012 Youth Olympic Games brought together 1,059 top athletes aged 14 to 18 from over 60 nations to compete in the seven sports which will also be represented at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. The Games included 10 days of competition as Team USA collected 10 medals, including three golds, three silvers and four bronzes.
