125 Years Ago Feb. 3, 1887

A little more snow would make splendid sleighing.

The happiest people are those who take the weather as it comes.

Valentines have taken the place of Christmas goods in the show windows.

The postal law makes it a larceny to take a newspaper and refuse to pay for it.

It is reported that Erie County has paid $2,700 for sheep killed by dogs during 1886.

Quite frequently we see horses left standing without being blanketed. This should not be.

Mr. Mathias Walter, of Alden Center, and Miss Anna Ertell, of this town, were married Jan. 18th.

There will be a grand opening at Mr. Henry Balthasar’s hotel, corner of Railroad and West Main streets, on Saturday evening of this week.

The triple use of figures occurs in 1888. The triple use in the annal of time will not occur again until 1911, 1999, 2000, 2022, 2111, 2122, 2202, 2212 and 2222.

Mrs. Christ. Koch wishes us to state that she would like to do the washing for several families in this village. Anyone having washing to do will do well to give her a call.

65 Years Ago Feb. 13, 1947

Having met with community approval, the sponsors of the Lancaster Junior Chamber of Commerce will proceed with plans at the Moose Club Monday night, where at its first meeting the group will name temporary officers to pilot the newly formed organization.

Residents of Church St., Lombardy St., Broadway and vicinity are indignant about their current gas bills. They claim the bills are from 25 to 110 percent higher than the previous month and in some cases, higher than any bill ever received from the Iroquois Gas Corp. The group of about 30 residents have mailed a letter to the Public Service Commission in Albany.

Lancaster Village Police Chief Edward P. Bund has been granted a two month leave of absence from duty because of ill health. The doctor’s recommendation was a vacation, so Bund and his wife will leave March 1 for a six-week stay in Bradenton, Fla.

55 Years Ago Feb. 7, 1957

Captain John Webster was recently made commanding officer of the heavy cruiser, USS Rochester, while he is stationed in Long Beach, Calif. The Town Line resident graduated from Lancaster High School and in 1931 from Annapolis.

The remodeling and the refurbishing of the former Braun’s Department Store, Central Ave. and W. Main St., as the new home of the New York Store is almost complete, according to Henry Kahn, proprietor.

Joseph Cerullo, Mercury dealer in Depew, will enter a car in the Daytona Beach races Feb. 12-13 this year. Driven by John Pfohl, the car will leave Depew at the end of the week.

25 Years Ago Feb. 12, 1987

The lack of student parking spaces in the Depew High School lots was among the topics of discussion at the Feb. 5 Depew Board of Education meeting. Richard Zolnowski of French Road, Depew, asked the board why his son was not being allowed to park his car in the high school lot when there are at least 25 to 30 empty parking spaces every day.

The Lancaster High School boys’ varsity basketball team broke a three game losing streak Tuesday with an 80-52 victory over the West Seneca West Indians at Lancaster.
