Zurbrick Road repairs could be complete by 2013

Zurbrick Road residents have been waiting more than two years for their street to be repaired.

Village of Depew officials are confident they won’t have to wait much longer.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is putting out to bid its remediation work along the banks of Cayuga Creek, which runs along a portion of the roadway, according to Depew Mayor Steven Hoffman.

“We’re pushing them to get this thing started and moving,” he said.

The residential street has been open solely to local traffic since late 2009, when a portion of the road collapsed.

The street has been in need of repair since at least 2001, but when work began, contaminated soil was discovered along the creek. That needs to be cleaned up before any repairs can be made. The road is owned by the Town of Cheektowaga and the Village of Depew, with a portion of the bank owned by Erie County.

Depew officials have been seeking money from the county for the repairs since 2009. New County Executive Mark Poloncarz announced his candidacy against former county leader Chris Collins on the street and made it an issue in his campaign.

Village officials have had “preliminary discussions” with county leaders, Hoffman said.

“Somebody’s got to pay for the road here. We don’t know how were going to divvy that up ... it’s still in the making.”

Poloncarz’s press secretary, Peter Anderson, said it hasn’t been decided what role, if any, the county will play in repairing Zurbrick.

“We want to see what happens with the DEC work .... and what’s going on after that, we’ll see,” he said.

Village Trustee Mike Nolder said he expects the work won’t be completed until spring 2013 because of weather and timing.

“It looks like it’s coming to fruition now and we’re finally going to get that thing settled and done,” he said. email: cfarrell@beenews.com
