14U Regals beat Team Pittsburgh for Top Gun crown
The 14U Buffalo Regals — based out of Cheektowaga — recently beat Team Pittsburgh, 3-1, to claim the Amherst Top Gun Tournament Championship.
The Regals carried the play throughout the first two periods with terrific forechecking by Zoey Perchuluk, Kirsten Bull, Brynn Wopperer and Lydia Gavner. They scored once in the first on a tip-in by Emma Ruggiero off a shot by Maeve Christ and added two more in the second by Alyse Borelli. Her first goal came on a slap shot from the point on the power play, assisted by Jillian Koop and Maddie Norton, and the second came from the slot.
In the third, Pittsburgh threw everything they had at the Regals, but the defense, led by Lily Markley and Megan Reukauf and the goaltending of Maddy Utz, prevented them from scoring more than one goal.
To get to the finals, the Regals beat a very tough Amherst team, 4-3, on the strength of Emma Ruggiero’s hat trick and the clutch goaltending in the closing minutes by Mackenna Walp, including a furious last 30 seconds.
In the round robin, the Regals went 3-0 and claimed the top seed in the playoffs. They opened up the bracket with a win versus crosstown rival West Seneca, 7-2, in which Maddie Norton and Brynn Wopperer both found the back of the net three times for hat tricks.
