McFarland breaks 1,000-point barrier at Hilbert

Dan McFarland Dan McFarland On Jan. 25, Hilbert College’s Dan McFarland became the ninth men’s basketball player to break the 1,000-point scoring record.

The junior guard entered the game needing 15 points to join the special club of Hawks’ players who have broken the plateau. By halftime, the lefty scored 10 points and grabbed two offensive rebounds as the Hawks found themselves down by 10 points to Penn State Behrend.

Hilbert opened the second half on a 24-6 run, which gave the Hawks their first lead at 13:35. During that scoring surge, McFarland was involved in seven of the 10 buckets scored by the Hawks (three made baskets himself and four assists).

At 12:08, McFarland was fouled on a backdoor reverse layup, sending him to the foul line to earn the traditional three-point play and his 1,000 point. His free throw rolled around the rim but somehow deflected back to his waiting hands along the baseline. Calmly, he sank his 1,001 point.

McFarland continues his climb up the scoring ladder in an effort to reach Dallas Reinard, Hilbert’s all-time leading scorer, who finished his career with 1,810 points. Sitting in eighth place is Jim LaValee, who was credited with 1,109 points.
