Diamond Girls finish second at ASA Eastern Nationals

The New Era Diamond Girls Gold 16U girls fastpitch softball team recently attended the ASA Eastern Nationals in York, Pa., where they came within an eyelash of claiming the tournament title.

The tournament included several pool games in a double elimination format, and the girls played their hearts out in a 13-inning battle with the Pittsburgh Power, coming out on top, 6-2, to advance to the winners bracket championship game.

The Diamond Girls lost to the Ohio Tigerlillies in the winners bracket championship game, but went on to win the losers bracket game to get a rematch with the Tigerlillies.

In the rematch, the Diamond Girls took the first game, 5-3, to set up one final contest for the tournament title. That second contest came down to extra innings, where a hard fought battle by both teams ended in a 4-3 loss for the Diamond Girls, who finished the tournament 9-2 overall.

Members of the team include East Amherst residents Nikki Attea, Courtney Kadish and Kyle Plimpton, Williamsville resident Robin Kennery, Getzville resident Ashley Fillmore, Lancaster residents Michelle DelPrince and Caitlyn Colucci, West Seneca resident Ashley McCormick, Cheektowaga resident Jen Mikolajek and Orchard Park resident Taylor Swiatek.
