Ludwig Depew’s Andrew Romano has been eyeing a Section VI championship ever since winning the title as an eighth grader in 2008. Romano has come close to matching the feat since, but each time has fallen just short.

Romano had his final chance to win as a senior Monday at the Section VI Championship and State Qualifier at Diamond Hawk Golf Course in Cheektowaga.

Once again, Romano fell just short as he shot a 27-hole score of 117 that was one shot worse than the 116 shot by champion Ryan Kaufmann of Iroquois.

Romano, the defending ECIC champion, did qualify for the New York State Championship at Cornell University on June 2-4 along with eight other golfers, including Lancaster’s Bradley Belote.

Through the first 18 holes, Romano shot an 80 to make the cut for the final nine holes. Randolph eighth grader Nolan Ditcher had the best score on the first 18 with a 79. The winner goes to the golfer with the best 27-hole score and Romano was looking to take it by shooting a 37 on the final nine holes. It wasn’t enough as Kaufmann had a 36 to win by one.

Belote, a ninth grader at Lancaster High School, joined Romano in making the cut and qualifying for the state team by shooting an 81 on the first 18. His score on the final nine holes was 41 to give him a total of 122 that was good for seventh place. The top-nine scores qualified for states with 10th place earning an alternate. The qualifying line was 123.

Lancaster also had two other golfers compete at Diamond Hawk on Monday. Senior Benjamin Schick shot a 90 to finish in 34th place, while junior Larry Stuber was 56th with a score of 102.

Besides Romano, Belote, Ditcher and Kaufmann, the other qualifiers for the state team were Grand Island’s Kevin Borowicz, Williamsville North’s David Berkun, Frontier’s Nick Ortiz, Williamsville North’s Ben Reichert and Olean’s Wil Bathurst. This will be Romano’s fourth trip to the state championship.

Monday’s round was delayed near the end by a 30-minute lightning delay as players were finishing up the final two holes.
