Schermerhorns celebrate 80th wedding anniversary


Cleta and Marlo Schermerhorn, former Lancaster residents, marked 80 years of marriage June 29. Cleta and Marlo Schermerhorn, former Lancaster residents, marked 80 years of marriage June 29. Marlo and Cleta Schermerhorn, formerly of Elm Street in Lancaster, celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary on June 29 in Dalton, Mass.

The couple met in 1929 while both were attending Ithaca College.

Marlo, 102, taught in the Lancaster Central School District from 1932 to 1965. He is the co-founder and original director of the Lancaster Town Band.

Cleta, 101, is a former middle school teacher for Amherst Central School District who spent many years directing the choir at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on Pleasant Avenue.

Their family now extends five generations, to their great-great-grandchildren.

The couple currently resides at Sugar Hill, an assisted living facility, near their son, Devon, in Dalton. They were surrounded by friends and family in celebration of their long union.
