St. Mary’s baseball ready for postseason

The St. Mary’s baseball team is ready for the playoffs after a more-than-solid regular season. The Lancers finished 14-4 overall and 8-4 in league play. The team took some opponents by surprise this year.

“I don’t know if we’ve overachieved but we definitely surprised some teams,” St. Mary’s Coach Mike Wagner said. “We beat Canisius twice this year. We knocked off Frannies (St. Francis) after losing to them. We beat everybody we’re supposed to beat. I’m very happy.”

The lineup has been deadly throughout the season, with contributions coming up and down the order.

“We hit the ball. We have a pretty darn good lineup. Everybody one through nine can hit,” Wagner said. “We have our three big guys in Alex Bish, Joe Barberio and Zach Penksa. They’re all seniors. They got one, two and three in the hitting order. Then there are two juniors who are hitting four and five – Christian Szablewski and Matt Ciezki. Then we have James Ando and Cole Laskowski. Bish, Penksa and Barberio set the table for us.”

The team was dealt a tough blow before the season when top starting pitcher Collin Tytka tore his meniscus. He was lost for the season. But Frank Propis and Ben Mazurowski have both stepped up to join Alex Bish in the rotation.

“Our pitching has been very good,” Wagner said. ”We lost our main starter but the other have been lights out. We’re hitting the ball too.”

St. Mary’s finished second in Monsignor Martin for the regular season. They’ll begin the playoffs Friday with a game against Cardinal O’Hara. A win there would match them up with the winner of St. Francis and Bishop Timon in the semifinal round of the Georgetown Cup Playoffs.

“We just have to keep doing what we’re doing, which is keep hitting and getting good pitching,” Wagner said. “Basically that’s the game of baseball. If we can keep producing and scoring runs, we should be fine. We’re strong up the middle. We have good catching, a good middle, good centerfielder. I’ll play anybody. We’re pretty solid.”
