Children’s Specials

Holiday Craft for children ages 5 to 12 will take place at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, presented by the Lancaster Youth Bureau.

Tech Sundays Makerspace gives 5- to 10-year-olds a chance to try out new gadgets such as Osmo, Sphero, Little Bites, Cubelets and Snap Circuits at 2 p.m. Sundays, Dec. 17, Jan. 14, Feb. 11 and March 11.

Free Math Tutoring for grades three to nine is available from 6 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday until Dec. 19, resuming Jan. 16. NYS-certified math teacher Catherine Thielmann will be on hand.

Winter Craft for children ages 5 to 12 will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10. Call 683-1120 or stop by the library to register.


Junior Friends of the Library, for 12- to 18-year-olds, is an opportunity for participants to volunteer, raise funds and sponsor youth-oriented programs. Meetings are at 1 p.m. Sundays, Dec. 17, Jan. 14, Feb. 11 and March 11. To join, call Miss Gwen at the library or email cassidyg@buffalolib.org.

Teen Gaming takes place from 3 to 4:45 p.m. every Friday. “Exergame” with Wii video games and board games. Snacks are provided.


Chess and Classic Board Game Club meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month; the next meeting is Dec. 9. Participants should bring their own boards, and those younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Family Literacy Classes continue with “Understanding Fluency” from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, and is for parents of children in prekindergarten through fourth grade. Call 686-3390 to register; classes are led by Beth Farrar, certified literacy specialist and Lancaster educator.


Friends of Lancaster Library is accepting new members from 1 to 2 p.m. the second Thursday of every month. The group is always looking for new members.

Lancaster Library Board meetings will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month.

Adult Social Knitting Group meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month. All experience levels are welcome.

Hatha Yoga is a four-week yoga session that runs from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 4, 11, 18 and 25. There are also Friday classes from 2 to 3 p.m. Jan. 5, 12, 19 and 26. Classes are taught by certified yoga instructor Peggy Basin; space is limited. Registration is required, and students are asked to bring their own mat.

Adult Computer Training

Intro to Windows 10 will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11. Participants will learn about the latest operating system from Microsoft; basic mouse skills are required.

Book a technology trainer for one-on-one assistance with software support or internet training. Sessions are not designed to troubleshoot computer problems or repair hardware. Call 683-1120 to register for a 45-minute appointment.

Registration is required for all events, unless otherwise noted. The Lancaster Public Library serves residents of Lancaster and Depew.

The library, at 5466 Broadway in the Village of Lancaster, can be reached at 683-1120. Parking is available in the lot at the library or at Trinity Episcopal Church, Lancaster Presbyterian Church, Potter’s House and the Moose Club.

Library hours

10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.

From September through May, the Lancaster Library is able to provide seven day-per-week service through the community’s donations.

Donations are accepted to help provide this continued service.

The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library offers downloadable e-books, audiobooks and videos that can be listened to or viewed on your computer and transferred to a portable device. There are never any late fees. Titles automatically return to the library’s collection.

This service allows patrons with a valid library card to download materials to their devices for free.
