Richard Wojciechowski, former St. Mary’s coach, athletic director


Wojciechowski Wojciechowski Richard “Dick” Wojciechowski, 90, of Lancaster, died Friday, March 2, 2018.

Mr. Wojciechowski was born on Oct. 8, 1927, and was raised and educated in Depew. In high school, he played football, basketball and baseball, and accepted a football scholarship to Niagara University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business from Niagara and later earned a master’s degree in teaching from Canisius College.

Following graduation from NU, he served in the Korean War for two years as a first lieutenant and platoon leader. It was during this time that he met and married the former Lillian Ponosny of Depew. They were married in 1952 and enjoyed 46 years together until her death in 1998.

Mr. Wojciechowski coached St. Mary’s football from 1956 to 1978, basketball from 1954 to 1986 and baseball from 1955 to 1992. In 1964, he was appointed athletic director of St. Mary’s, succeeding Dominic Giles. He remained the AD for 35 years until 1999. Mr. Wojciechowski served as president of the Monsignor Martin Association from 1981 to 2008.

Mr. Wojciechowski is survived by three children, Phyllis Martin, Patricia Dady and Richard; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sibling, Natalie Piersa.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on March 6 at Our Lady of Pompeii Church. Arrangements were made by the Wendel & Loecher Inc. Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s High School, 142 Laverack Ave., Lancaster, NY 14086.
